President Thom (back at his duty station) welcomed everyone to the friendly El Cerrito Rotary Club.  Charlie led the flag salute and Don provided a very thoughtful invocation.

President Thom back at his post!

Introduction of Guests and Visiting Rotarians by Sec Dr. John introduced our visiting Rotarian from the New Forest Rotary club in England.  Our guest today John Charvet was hosted by Jack who introduced him.  John owns the coin store across from Charlie Weaver’s office.

Announcements:

đ      Michael D reminded us of the Reno Fun trip and encouraged us to get the info to him ASAP

đ      Jane announced our club Christmas (holiday)party will be on Friday Dec 14th at Salutes in Richmond.

đ      Karen announced the expansion of the PR committee.  She wants anyone who is willing to contribute to this committee to spend 30 minutes with her and learn what happens.  Great idea so who is it going to be?

đ      Gary B announced the District 5160 Interact Conference will be held November 10th at Liberty High School in Brentwood.  He may need some help from Rotarians to provide transportation for Interact members.  This is a great opportunity for Rotarians to learn more about what is happening in the fastest growing segment of Rotary.  Contract Gary with questions.

đ      Tracy gave a report on the community service project for this year.  It is to help project STAND which operates two shelters for battered women.  The largest one is in Contra Costa County.  What our club will do is provide a number of “Welcome Buckets” which are given to the women when they check into the facility.  They also are given gift certificates to Target.  Our club will make a contribution for purchasing a number of these.  This a great project that will make a big difference in these women’s lives.  It will also be possible for the Interact Club to assist us in this endeavor.

Happy dollars:  Dr. John is happy about Cal Football being #2 in the country.  Nobuko is happy about the fantastic scenery on her autumn tour of New England.  Rod is happy about Stanford beating USC in football and $5 for his jazz group playing at Central Perk on the 14th. Jack is happy about his newest grandson Jack Freethy.  He is not sure of the middle name but he knows it is not hammer.  Gary B is happy about wife Norma’s Desert Heat Dance Troupe’s fifth annual Desert Dance festival at the Veterans Hall in El Cerrito this Saturday night.  Jane is Happy about her son getting married.  Tracy is happy about daughter Sarah being in the production of Annie which will be in Dec at the CC theatre in El Cerrito.  Don is sad about his guest speaker not being here today but happy the great three week vacation he and Mary had to Granada and Barbados.  Sil is happy to be grandpa for the sixth time.  Kevin is happy he survived the offloading of the walk in refrigerator for his new restaurant.  Karen is happy about the great summer for her business and the new book that she and Todd have completed and will be offering for sale.  Charlie is happy to be back and for being able to get around better.  Thom is $5 happy for being ambulatory and back at Rotary (so are we!)

Sgt at Arms: - Kevin was not on duty today

Today’s Program

Since Don’s guest speaker was a no show today he had the opportunity to share with us a bit of his history and experience of Granada and Barbados.  Don’s wife Mary is from Granada.  As many of us remember the US rescued Granada from the clutches of communism in 1983 when the USSR and Cuba were in the process of turning the island into an airstrip for re-supplying Angola.  The people of Granada remember what the US did and are thankful.  This is another of the actions Ronald Regan took to make the world a better place that many don’t know or lack understanding of the real facts.

Don explaining the beauty and reality of Granada and Barbados

Don shared with us just how beautiful the island of Granada is and what a wonderful place it is to vacation.  He also told us about his experience in 1981 of sailing with friends to the island and seeing first hand what was happening.  Today the island shows no signs of the 1983 situation.  The main industry of the island is nutmeg trees.

Those of you who missed this presentation really lost out.  It proves one of the things that Jack Freethy always says:  “The best presentations are given by fellow Rotarians.”  In this case that is true with a lot of exclamation points!!!!

Lottery Winner:  Nobuko had her ticket drawn and selected a cat’s eye marble for a free lunch.  She also won the basket of goodies.  Next week the drawing will be worth $75.

Interact Corner by Gary Buffon – Rotary club advisor to Interact:

The October Board meeting is on Saturday and I will give you an update in the next issue.
